It’s a big deal to me. Had the privilege (and I do mean that word….regardless of my mood and temper at the moment) lately of teaching a two year old obedience…and its importance?
Is it a big deal that EB climbed the stairs [albeit safely] when she KNEW that it was against the rules? Probably not. However, it is important to me to discipline her as we travel further down this little road of life together. It is SO important to me that she LOVE the Lord her God with all of her heart, soul and mind, be respectful to/of others, that she loves all people, etc. etc. etc…. For me, obedience is a key ingredient in the overall picture. Geez, it can be so hard. The first time I saw her sitting in timeout at school, it BROKE my heart…She wasn’t being “obedient” to her precious teachers. I may or may not have shed a tear. There are times, I will admit, that right smack dab in the middle of a tense moment, she shoots me a look, kills me with her honesty, or diverts her eyes SO severely that I just laugh… I do not recommend it.
A look into a likely conversation (a minor infraction):The scene: After climbing the stairs while I was getting dinner ready and Jason was changing clothes:
Me: EB, please come here right now (after hearing her jumping on the trampoline from upstairs)!
EB: (timidly walking to the top of the stairs) Hey mommy.
Me: EB, did mommy or daddy help you up the stairs?
EB: [emphatically] THEY.DID.NOT. (as if it was our wrongdoing and not hers)
Hey…at least she’s honest. Well, for today.
I would like to pick God’s brain for about five minutes…You know, like a Barbara Walters interview. I have to think as He ordered EB’s steps and the plan for her life He laughed REALLY hard thinking of us [and her] as she entered the twos-oh the looks we get…ohhh, the facial expressions of Evie Black. I’m grateful that He trusts me to train her up in the way she should go (although, I’m pretty sure I fail MISERABLY on an hourly basis)…I’m grateful that I have been entrusted with her life (THANK GOODNESS I have Jason Black by my side).. I am just plain grateful, but wow….the challenge….and patience, but OHHH the unconditional love (on His part and ours)!

I can't believe how TALL this girl is getting! She's even maturing in her sweet face!! WOW!!!
ReplyDeleteHope yall are doing great!!
PS. I recommend "Growing Kids God's Way" and "Don't Make Me Count to Three" for disciplining!! :)
I laughed SO.HARD. :) at the conversation between you two!
ReplyDeleteI love this post! EB looks so adorably mischievous. I think teaching our kids the things you mentioned is such an awesome responsibility. It is one that often overwhelms me and is daunting. But I am so glad God is there to be my partner in it all and that He has a sense of humor!
ReplyDeleteEvie Black is precious. That's all :)
